Karnataka sportspersons participating in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics have a Christmas special delivered by Namma Sarkara!  In a surprise move, the Chief Minister has announced a five-fold increase in award amounts to Olympic Medalists.
Gold medalists will now be awarded with Rs. 5 crore, while silver & bronze medalists will receive Rs. 3 crore and Rs. 1 crore respectively. While the Karnataka Olympic Association had requested the Government to double the award, the CM’s announcement took everyone by surprise & has received ample praise from the sporting community.
Namma Sarkara is known to have allotted Rs. 3 crore to conduct the upcoming State Games in Hubballi & Dharwad. Promising more funds for sports in the upcoming budget, the CM also said medal winners at the 2015 National Games in Kerala would be rewarded soon.
Financial support and incentives are crucial to encourage our hardworking and oft under-recognised athletes across the state. Let’s hope the government stays committed to developing Karnataka’s thriving sporting ecosystem.
