It is the best time for Basketball lovers in Karnataka. The Karnataka State Basketball Association (KSBBA) has announced the inaugural Karnataka Basketball League from August to September. KSBBA Honorary Secretary K Govindaraj said, “This league is for the benefit of mofussil players. We want to take the sport to mofussil areas and encourage talent.”
The focus seems to be, to empower the youth in the remotest corners of Karnataka, one basket at a time. Basketball, requires skill and stamina in equal measure, skills which engender a healthier youth. Especially in the rural areas of the state.
Eight teams from in and around Hassan, Vijayapura and Nanjangud have been chosen to be divided into two groups of four teams each. Even though the dates for the final match have not been declared, fans will be waiting with bated breath for the matches.
With all the talk about India’s performance at the Rio Olympics and our lack of a sports culture, such regional institutionalized initiatives are commendable. As Namma Karnataka leads the way once again, here is more power to the organizers and participants. May the best team win!
